Hóbor István is a Budapest-based painter whose work is defined by a distinctive, expressive visual language and a strong atmospheric sensibility. A graduate of the Teacher Training College in Pécs (Drawing and Hungarian Studies), he emerged early with a personal style that stood apart within the post-socialist cultural landscape.
Soon after completing his studies, he began presenting solo exhibitions in Budapest and across Hungary, while also teaching drawing, painting, and art history. Portraiture became an important part of his practice, often through international commissions, and his exhibitions were frequently accompanied by public talks and presentations that brought audiences closer to his creative process.
At the age of just twenty-five, his first major exhibition in Budapest received critical acclaim, with a noted art critic describing his work as already placing him “among the greats.” His paintings quickly found their way into private collections, and a series of exhibitions held along Lake Balaton attracted the attention of foreign galleries, leading to the acquisition of his works throughout Europe and overseas.
After this promising early period, he spent many years in the world of applied arts, working extensively as a graphic designer in advertising and film production. This professional chapter broadened his visual thinking and compositional discipline, even as it temporarily drew him away from painting.
In recent years, he has returned to fine art with renewed energy and clarity. His current period is marked by a confident artistic renaissance, characterized by mature, distinctive works and an ongoing presence through new solo exhibitions.
